Surf Judging Format
Divisons:
- WS Lasso – All ages, for riders who are working on dropping the rope
- WS Men’s Open
- WS Women’s Open
Judging Criteria
Judging – Riders are encouraged to perform a smooth flowing routine with a wide variety of tricks. Each trick should be executed as cleanly as possible and taken to its limit. Judges will score riders based trick and style components. Completion of a pass without falls should be highly rewarded in the amateur divisions. Falls are not reflected in Style scores. Within a division, the performance of all riders shall be evaluated by the same panel of judges.
Judge Riders on the following:
- Most difficult maneuvers
- Maneuvers with most power
- Maneuvers with most style
- Maneuvers with most progression (charging the maneuver as opposed to attempting it with caution)
- New age maneuvers presented successfully
- Activity (time spent being progressive, endurance of rider)
- Wake usage (using the whole wake, especially far back where it is most difficult)
Scoring – Scoring will use a scale from 1 to 10. Judges score each rider after each riders run. Care should be taken to watch the riders run as tricks are performed quickly. At the end of each heat, judges will give score sheets to boat judge. Each judge should review his score sheets to insure they have scored each rider and written that on the score sheet before relinquishing control of the score sheet. Judges notes should support their ranking. Subsequently the boat judge sums the points for each individual rider. This summation process should be completed at the conclusion of each heat. The boat judge then ranks each rider in descending order based upon total points: 1st, 2nd, etc. In the event of a tie in total points, the judges will check their notes and collaborate on the final ranking. Once this is complete, a summary sheet is prepared. The Division will be listed as a section heading and then each rider’s name and ranking will be listed in descending order. Each rider in each division will be included. This summary sheet will be transmitted to the organizer/chief judge or individual responsible for presentation of awards. Care should be taken to insure proper control of the Judges Score sheets, the summation ranking sheet and the summary sheet used for presentation.
Composition –
- Reflects the overall composition of the run, which should include range of tricks completed, style appropriate tricks, division appropriate tricks, compound tricks, unique tricks with grabs and personal flair or other embellishments.
- Did the rider do a number of different tricks throughout the run?
- Was the degree of difficulty appropriate to the division?
- Were multiple trick strung together?
- Were the tricks unique and include grabs, and other moves?
- Did the rider add their own personal flair?
- Intensity –
- Reflects the riders ability to “go big”. Intensity is an assessment of the level of aggressiveness of the run. The rider will receive a higher intensity score if they put forth a maximum effort in each trick they perform.
- Did the rider get “big air” on their aerial tricks?
- On carving maneuvers did the rider perform them rapidly and in tight arcs?
- Were the tricks performed aggressively?
- Technical –
- Reflects the overall execution of the tricks with the minimal amount of errors. Successful tricks masterfully executed will receive a higher score than those executed poorly.
- Was the ride in control and clean with minimal errors?
- Did the rider perform high risk tricks relative to their division?
- Did the rider link difficult tricks?
One Pass Format – The rider will be allowed two falls; their ride will be finished on the third fall. The coordinator can adjust the allowable fall total to meet event requirements and may limit all riders to one pass due to venue or time constraints.
